STEM Extras at Blairstown Farmers Market

We’re adding an exciting new component to our Summer of Science program for 2021. In addition to our many free activities, we are now offering a more advanced kit option with guided instruction from Sandy right at the farmer’s market!

Once again we’ll be back at the Blairstown Farmer’s Market, bringing fun science, technology, engineering, art, and maker activities to families in our community. As we have always done, we are offering these activities for free to everyone who visits the market. (Please make a donation to support our free Summer of Science activities!) The market is open on Saturdays, starting June 5th from 9:30 am to 1 pm at 5 Stillwater Rd, Blairstown, NJ 07825. The Kaleidoscope schedule for the season is:

  • June 5 – Spin Me Round – Spin art and spirographs
  • July 10 – Flights of Fancy – Paper rockets and airplanes
  • August 7 – TREP$ Marketplace
  • September 11 – Superhero Day – superhero masks, DIY comic books
  • October 30 – Halloween – Slime and bubbles

But this year we’re offering something MORE!

Each week that we are at the Blairstown Farmer’s Market, we’ll have an additional activity offered for a small fee. The profit from these projects will be used to make our free activities possible. Families can opt to either pick up a kit as a Take & Make they can complete at home using the provided instructions or kids can make it with Sandy on-site at the market between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm. Kits are available for a $10 donation. Kits will ONLY be available for the day listed.

Our first project is great engineering activity based on the popular Junior Solar Sprints Activity. Participants will build a “Ray Catcher” motorized car use provided materials. With a cardboard body, DC motor, wheels, aluminum axel, and assorted gears, young makers can optimize their vehicle for speed. (See below.) Those participating at the market will have access to solar panels to test their green machines. (Solar panels not available to Take & Make kits.) All kits will also include a battery pack for testing.

We are able to offer this kit at such a greatly reduced price for educational purposes thanks to the generosity of Pitsco Education and Trans Options. Pitsco offers many fantastic educational kits for schools, libraries, clubs, and homes. TransOptions delivers programs and services that improve mobility, the environment, and overall quality of life in northwestern New Jersey. TransOptions helps you find alternative commute options. They also offer programs in bicycle, pedestrian, and teen driver safety as well as environmental education and sustainability.

This kit and workshop will be only available on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the market. If you would like a kit, just use the donate button below to reserve yours for June 5. Use the optional note to let me know if you intend to pick-up or the car make on-site with me. Kits must be reserved in advance and will not be available without a reservation. But we’re not making this offer just once! Other kit activities for the season will include:

  • July 10 – Bamboo Stick Gliders
  • September 11 – Light Up Wrist Cuff
  • October 30 – Potions and Slime

Bookmark this website or follow us on social media for details. If there is interest in expanding the program, we will be happy to offer these special STEM projects at other Makers at the Market events, including Warren County Farmers Market and Washington Borough Farmers Market.

Don’t need a kit, but want to support our outreach work? Please, please, please donate to our Summer of Science or our TREP$ Fundraiser.
